Subjects Covered

Chemistry

Chemistry describes how all matter interacts and governs the building blocks of life. Chemistry allows us to create brand-new useful substances, from medicines to metal alloys for new buildings or machines. You will learn about how matter bonds together, what happens when you make and break the bonds and what governs how different elements behave.

“Chemistry itself knows altogether too well that - given the real fear that the scarcity of global resources and energy might threaten the unity of mankind - chemistry is in a position to make a contribution towards securing a true peace on earth”. - Kenichi Fukui

“Chlorine is a deadly poison gas employed on European battlefields in World War I. Sodium is a corrosive metal which burns upon contact with water. Together they make a placid and un-poisonous material, table salt. Why each of these substances has the properties it does is a subject called chemistry.” — Carl Sagan

English

Language is the most necessary of subjects. Imagine a world without language, without the ability to express oneself. It sets the very foundations for human interaction and is what separates us from our animal counterparts. Without language we would not have Science we would not have maths; it is the root of all human ingenuity. It allows us to express our very essence and inform people around us of our emotions, our desires and allows us to questions the world around us. It links humanity throughout the ages and is the reason why one can feel connected to the great minds of the past.

"The limits of my language are the limits of my world" - Ludwig Wittgenstein

"Language is the most massive and inclusive art we know, a mountainous and anonymous work of unconscious generations" - Edward Sapir

Mathematics

Maths is possibly the most essential tool human beings have ever invented, apart from language perhaps (as no language, no maths). Without maths, there would be nothing; it is the foundation upon which all knowledge has been laid. Maths is possibly the top A-Level that employers look for, as it shows clear logical thinking and problem-solving skills. So why not come and join us to learn about the fantastic subject that is mathematics?

As some of the greatest thinkers of their time said:

“To speak freely of mathematics, I find it the highest exercise of the spirit; but at the same time I know that it is so useless that I make little distinction between a man who is only a mathematician and a common artisan. Also, I call it the most beautiful profession in the world; but it is only a profession”- Blaise Pascal

“Arithmetic is a kind of knowledge in which the best natures should be trained, and which must not be given up”- Plato

“Number is the ruler of forms and ideas, and the cause of gods and demons.” - Pythagoras

Physics

Physics describes the world around us using the language of mathematics. It is an essential tool that has furthered the human race greatly. Delve into the world of the minute with particle physics, and explore the unimaginably vast with astrophysics. Physics is not for the faint-hearted or the lazy, but if you work hard enough at it, you will have a deeper understanding of how the world works, and you will look at the world in a new light. If you manage to master it, you get a feeling of satisfaction like no other.

"I like to say, when asked why I pursue science, that it is to satisfy my curiosity, that I am by nature a searcher trying to understand. If you haven't found something strange during the day, it hasn't been much of a day.” - John A Wheeler

" Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less. “ - Marie Curie

Biology

Biology is essentially the study of life, concerned with researching all aspects of the living world: from studying life directly by researching organisms such as bacteria, plants and animals or by looking at life from a more holistic point of view, focusing on ecosystems, evolutionary theory and the effect humans have on the world around us. Whether you wish to pursue a career in medicine or the life scieince or just have an interest in learning about the world around you and the complex organism that inhabit it then Biology is the perfect subect
